Complete the census. Vote.
United Way of Western Connecticut fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in greater Danbury, greater New Milford, and Stamford. We take actions and provide resources to support strong, healthy and resilient communities.
To solve the crises facing our local communities and our country, people need to be civically engaged, and policymakers must take action that will help workers, children and families.
To accomplish the best for our communities, we need an accurate census count to determine where resources are needed the most, and ensure citizens are registered to vote.
That’s why United Way is joining United Ways across the country to participate in the national United We Count, United We Vote initiative, a non-partisan effort to increase participation in the census and voting.
How can you join in and play an active role in our democracy?
Complete the 2020 census
The 2020 census is a count of every person in every community. But it’s more than just knowing how many people live in each city. The census helps determine the share of political power and federal funding across different communities. Participating in the census is in everyone's best interest, because it helps community leaders and elected officials better plan for our community, from school class sizes and health facilities, to public transit and the placement of grocery stores.
- Help Connecticut Get Counted. The State of Connecticut has an excellent website for the 2020 census.
- Why participate? "The Census is more than a head count. It's how lawmakers decide how much money your community gets for critical services. Without a full count, your school's lunch and special ed programs could get cut. Your fire department could buckle in the face of disaster. And you could see rollbacks in the vital healthcare services that the most vulnerable among us depend on." You can apply to work as a census taker, squash misinformation about the census, and learn other great ways to make sure our state gets counted!
- Did you know you can respond to the Census by mail, phone or online? Learn more at the U.S. government's 2020 census website, and get counted for your community!
- Need your census ID number? The U.S. Census Bureau can help.
