At United Way, we believe that everyone deserves access to healthy food.
Far too many in our region struggle to access affordable, healthy, and culturally relevant food. United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut surveys found that 50%+ of working adults find it a challenge to pay for food and 11% of households in our region are food insecure.
Healthy foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, can be difficult to access due to cost, convenience, and availability. For ALICE and others experiencing food insecurity, including older adults on fixed incomes, the cost is often the key barrier to eating fruits, vegetables, and other types of foods we need to thrive.
The Healthy Savings Program offers substantial discounts at the grocery store that help shoppers with limited budgets increase their purchasing power and put more fresh, nutritious food on their tables.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
With a Healthy Savings card or the mobile app, shoppers receive $10 of free fresh produce per week. No minimum purchase or match is required! Shoppers can also save on pre-qualified healthy food staples, such as lean meats, milk, bread, eggs, yogurt, cheese, beans, and more. Shoppers must shop at participating grocery stores. Eligibility is based on residence in the 27-town region we serve in Fairfield and Southern Litchfield counties and income qualification. Please note that we can only offer one Healthy Savings account per household.
